Kenya is an East African country, with its Capital, Nairobi, being the regional commercial hub. Its economy is also the largest in GDP in East and Central Africa. English and Swahili are the national languages. It is composed of about 42 ethnic groups distributed throughout the country. It is a country known for many things including its fascinating culture. The name used to refer to the food that is most eaten in Kenya literally means "to push the week".  Whilst there are many foods owed to the fact that there are many ethnic groups each with their own native foods, Kenyans must eat a combination of maize flour, referred to as Ugali in Swahili, and Sukuma wiki which refers to kales & collards. The Swahili word "sukuma wiki" directly translates to push the week in English. They call it so because it is the most economical food most Kenyans eat to push through the week.

 

Among the ethnic communities found in Kenya are the Maasai. They are Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people who live near game parks and also worldwide renowned for their distinctive customs and dress. Remember the award winning 2005 movie "The white masai"? They are among the few groups in the world who still maintain their traditions such as dressing and initiations even when they are in the Cities. The Kenya government has year in, year out instituted programs to encourage them to abandon their traditional age-old customs but in vain.

 

Among the people who made it through the Kenyan film industry is the award winning actress Lupita Nyong'o. She won the award for best supporting actress for her role in 12 years a slave. Her father Prof. Peter Anyang' Nyong'o is a Kenya politician, who is currently the senator for Kisumu county.
